Our History
Temple Mount Sinai was founded in 1898 out of an expanding need to be more than a cemetery association. We have owned three homes in our history | | El Paso's first synagogue building: Temple Mount Sinai, ca. 1901 | | | and are currently located at 4408 North Stanton Street. Renowned synagogue architect Sidney Eisenshtat designed this magnificent structure, nestled into the Franklin Mountains. Our home continues to be an inspiration for us to live our lives with spiritual meaning. This article by Rabbi Fierman explores our history in some detail.
Our Rabbis
From its early beginnings through the present day, Our Rabbis have led Temple Mount Sinai with vision. Each of our rabbis has built upon the foundations laid by his predecessor and in so doing has given this congregation the stability to serve congregants for over one hundred years. Rabbi Larry Bach currently leads our congregation. He came to us as Assistant Rabbi in 1998, and assumed the role of Rabbi when Rabbi Ken Weiss retired in July 2002. Rabbi Weiss now holds the title Rabbi Emeritus. Read more about our previous Rabbis here.
Our Home
Our beautiful building has been featured in newspapers, architectural magazines and other texts. We will soon provide a photographic tour of the building on this web page.
Torah in Glass
Torah in Glass is a phenomenal artwork by El Paso artist Hal Marcus. The dramatic, room-sized stained glass mural takes viewers on a colorful and symbolic tour through biblical history. It is a vivid artistic interpretation of the Five Books of Moses. The four panel art piece designed by Marcus was meticulously reproduced into glass by master glassworker Irma Peinado. Each panel is six and one-half feet tall by five feet wide. The windows form a dramatic, multi-colored mural of thousands of pieces of cut glass of various sizes and shapes. With glass as his medium, Marcus depicted many of the timeless tales of the Bible. From the creation of the universe, through the stories of Noah, the patriarchs of Genesis, and the life of Moses, the windows tell the story of humanity's relationship with God.
